About Us

Our Story

The Peter Bryan Onco-Health Initiative (PBOHI) was born from a deeply personal journey.

After witnessing the devastating impact of late-stage cancer diagnosis in underserved communities  including the loss of a close family member our founder, Peter Bryan, made a commitment: to ensure no one else would suffer in silence or due to lack of awareness.

What began as a small community outreach effort has now grown into a continent-wide initiative, powered by technology, driven by youth, and guided by compassion.

PBOHI was created to educate, support, and advocate, bridging critical gaps in cancer care and prevention across Africa.

From one story, a movement was born and it’s only just beginning.

The Cancer Burden in Africa

Cancer is now the leading cause of death globally, surpassing HIV/AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis combined. The threat is especially severe in sub-Saharan Africa, where non-communicable diseases like cancer are rising rapidly but often go unnoticed and underfunded.

According to Maia Olsen (2015), up to 80% of the global cancer burden is expected to fall on low- and middle-income countries by 2030, many of which are in Africa. Yet, only 5% of global cancer resources are allocated to these regions (Knaul, Frenk, & Shulman, 2011). This resource gap leads to:

If left unaddressed, cancer will continue to have a devastating impact not only on health systems, but on the social and economic fabric of African communities.

What we do in the community

At PBOHI, the community is not just our focus — it’s our foundation.

Our Community Programs Include:
  • Mass Awareness Campaigns using radio, social media, and street outreach

  • Workshops & Training for students, community health workers, and caregivers

  • Mobile Screening Initiatives offering free or low-cost cancer checks

  • Support Groups providing emotional and financial assistance for patients and families

Whether it’s a youth ambassador leading a school session or a survivor sharing their story, our strength lies in collective action. Together, we’re building informed, empowered, and healthier communities, one conversation at a time.
